Ladislas Starewitch

(1882 - 1965)

 Biographical Notes:

1882

Birth of Ladislas Alexandrovich Starevich on August 8 in Moscow of Polish nationality.

1886

His mother dies while giving birth to a still-born baby girl. His father entrusts relatives with his upbringing. He is sent to primary school in Kovno, and then to secondary school in Dorpat (Estonia). An independent and critical mind, he takes an interest in drawing, painting, and entomology. He is expelled from school.

1906

November 25: wedding with Anna Zimmermann. Employed by the geographical survey society in Kovno, he spends his leisure time doing theater, photography, and then making movies. He is a correspondent of the ethnographic museum of Kovno.

1907

Birth of a first daughter, Irene, who would play in a few movies and then collaborate to her father's work.

1909

First movie: "Sur le Niemen".

1910

Starevich publishes caricatures in "Koviénskoié ziepkalo" (The Mirror of Kovno)

1910

"Lucanus Cervus," first movie with animated puppets

1912

Starevich moved to his own studio apartment in Moscow

1913

Birth of a second daughter, Jeanne, who would play in many 1920's movies under the acting name of Nina Star.

1918-19

Starevich leaves Moscow for Odessa and Yalta. He leaves Crimea for France via Italy (not Germany).

Late 1920

Starevich settles down in France for good, in a suburb of Paris. He produces and directs his own movies, leaving the distribution to various other companies.

1928

Starevich signs a production contract with Louis Nalpas.

1933

The contract is broken and all subsequent movies will be joint productions.

1956

Death of Anna.

1965

February 26: death of Starevich.

1984

Death of Nina Star.

1992

Death of Irene.
